The body of a man was pulled from water in a disused quarry in Monasterevin on Saturday evening, May 26.

It is believed that he got into difficulties while swimming with friends in the lake at the disused quarry in Ballykelly.

Gardai from the Water Unit attended the scene and the man’s body was recovered around 7.30pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene and later taken to the mortuary at Naas General Hospital. A postmortem will take place on Monday.

His name will not be officially released until family members have been notified.

A garda spokesperson has warned about the dangers of swimming in unpatrolled stretches of water as the fine weather continues.

“We are warning people not to swim in lakes and disused quarries. They are extremely dangerous, and we would warn people not to swim in them at all,” said the Garda.
