Gardai investigating Robertstown car-jacking

Two suspected dissident republicans are in Garda custody following a search of a Newbridge house.

Two suspected dissident republicans are in Garda custody following a search of a Newbridge house.

In what Gardai have described as a “particularly nasty” incident, a Robertstown man was assaulted and had his car stolen just after midnight in the early hours of Thursday morning, January 10.

The man, who lives on road between Robertstown and Brockagh Cross was woken by his dogs at approximately 12.20am.

When he went to investigate he was assaulted by one of three men who were in his garage.

The men demanded that he drive them to Prosperous, and fearing that his house was about to be robbed and for his sleeping family, he agreed. However, shortly after beginning the drive, the man was shoved out of his black 2002 Mercedes.

He was assaulted, with punches and kicks, and the three drove off in the car.

It was found burned out in Tallaght later in the night, which Gardai believe, is an indicationof where they had come from.

However, so far there are no leads as to why the men were in the Robertstown area at that hour of the night apparently without any other form of transport.

“We have no leads, no witnesses,” a source said, and agreed that they were interested to hear of anything else that may have occurred during the night in that area.

The victim was not badly injured in the incident, and was not brought to hospital.
