Garda warning after car break-ins at Mullaghreelan Woods

Local gardai are calling on visitors to Mullaghreelan Woods, near Kilkea, outside Athy to be extra vigilant with their belongings following a number of car break-ins in recent weeks.

Speaking to the Leader, Sgt Chris Cahill of Castledermot Garda Station, is advising people not to leave valuables in their car near the woodland area.

“If you leave your bag, phone or laptop on full display it will make you vulnerable to a car break-in,” said Sgt Cahill.

“With the good weather we had, in all woodland walk areas and walks along the rivers and canals, there has been a number of break-in incidents.

“People need to be mindful not to leave their valuables in their cars. There’s no CCTV or security in these places which makes these crimes very difficult to solve.

“We would advise people to leave their valuables at home. Under the seat or in the boot is not a good option,” Sgt Cahill added.

Meanwhile, Castledermot gardai arrested three people in the Kilkea Hotel and Golf Club grounds area last Wednesday night.

One male and two females in their early 20s were found partying overnight in one of the unoccupied lodges on the now closed estate.

The three suspects, one from the local area, were detained in Athy Garda Station for a short while, later released and a file is now being for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
