Garda Ombudsman to probe fatal smash between Naas and Newbridge
ON Sunday evening last, not long after the road was reopened to traffic, a single bunch of flowers marked the location of the fatal crash which claimed the life of a County Laois man.
What remained of the once tall metal lamppost, which provided lighting on the approach to the roundabout between Naas and Newbridge, was bent towards the ground.
Tyre marks were visible on the grass, suggesting the point at which the vehicle left the road between the Peugeot car dealership and Tougher’s self-service station and restaurant.
27-year-old Keith McMahon from Crettyard, Co. Laois died shortly after the vehicle he was driving collided with the lamppost.
Yesterday, Monday, both the gardai and the Gardai Siochana Ombudsman Commission began an investigation into the fatal accident which took place on Sunday at 3.20am.
Minutes before the crash, the car was pursued by two Garda vehicles, one apparently attached to the Armed Support Unit, along the Dublin Road, Naas and through the town along North Main Street and South Main Street.
There is speculation that Mr. McMahon, who was known to the gardai, had visited a filling station and put petrol into his 1999 Dublin-registered Toyota Corolla without paying for the fuel.
Gardai visited business premises in Naas on Monday seeking CCTV images taken at the time the car was being driven. The car was later seen at the Kilminchy Roundabout on the Dublin side Portlaoise and was being driven in the direction of Naas.
It is understood the vehicle was driven off the motorway at the junction north of Naas marked by the “Big Ball” and proceeded, pursued by the gardai, through Naas.
Gardai forensics investigators, specialising in road accidents, conducted a technical examination throughout Sunday and both lanes of the road remained closed until 4pm.
The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission is appealing for any witnesses to the incident or for anybody with information which may assist the investigation to come forward. The GSOC can be reached by phone at 1890 600800.
