Garda murder condemned by Kildare County Council
WHAT was described as the callous and cold blooded act – the shooting of Garda Adrian Donohoe in Co Louth over the weekend – was unanimously condemned by Kildare County Council on Monday.
“He was never given a chance,” Mayor, Michael Nolan, told the chamber at Naas. “It defied human logic.”
Cllr. Padraig McEvoy said: “Such callous disregard for life is unnecessary. We rely on the Gardai to protect society.”
Cllr. Liam Doyle asked that a book of condolences be opened at Garda stations around the country. Cllr. John McGinley said he “just couldn’t believe it.”
He said: “Some of our public servants put their life on the line. Maybe people will take it easy when they condemn public servants in the future.”
Cllr. Willie Callaghan said Kildare gardai were stunned.
Cllr. Senan Griffin said the dead Garda was minding the community when he was supposed to be off duty. Speaking of the killers of “a brave brave man,” he said: “Some people call them dissidents. I call them thugs.”
Cllr. Darren Scully said his wife is a serving Garda Sergeant and trained with the Garda who was with Garda Donohue’s companion at the time of the shooting.
He understood a criminal gang did the killing and said people with information should come forward “and bring these bastards to justice.”
Describing the “cold blooded” killers as “scumbags,” he said most Gardai wanted to remain unarmed to maintain the respect and trust of the people. “They are doing a very difficult job. I hope the Gardai will find the animals who did this.”
Cllr. Liam Doyle wished the Gardai every success in solving this “capital murder.”
He called for a book of condolences to be opened in Garda stations.
County Manager, Michael Malone, joined in the vote of sympathy for this “brutal murder.”
He said the Council had a close working relationship with the Gardai.
