Two Monasterevin houses had to be evacuated following a fire at a car dealership on Saturday 29 December.

Kildare Fire Service received a call at 6.50pm about a fire at Tommy Maloney Car Sales, Chief Fire Officer Celina Barrett told the Leinster Leader.

Monasterevin and Athy fire stations sent water tankers to tackle the blaze, which was well under way by the time they arrived on the scene.

Although the fire was contained to a garage workshop, this building contained cyliners of Acetylene (or Ethyne) gas. Because of the presence of this explosive material, two nearby houses had to be evacuated and the road had to be closed due to safety concerns. These evacuations stayed in place for 24 hours to ensure that the cylinders were fully cooled.

Ms Barrett said the Fire Service “were able to put out the fire and make sure it didn’t spread”. She said it took about two hours to put out the flames.

Nobody was injured in the fire and the cause had not yet been established at the time of going to press.
