Funeral of Carlow shooting victim takes place in Naas

THE parish church of Our Lady and St. David in Naas was thronged for the funeral mass of tragic Deirdre Keenan today (Saturday, March 2).
Curate Fr. Declan Thompson thanked the many neighbours and friends of the Keenan family, who live at Cois an Feadain, Caragh Road, for their help and support since her death.
Ms. Keenan died of gunshot wounds on Monday last at a guesthouse in Carlow town. Another person found in the same building, John Deegan (53) of Cadamstown, Birr, Co. Offaly, also died of gunshot wounds, say the gardai.
Deirdre was the daughter of Jim and Mary McGarr and the family home was at Our Lady’s Place, Naas.
Her dad was a member of the famed Gallowglass Ceili Band and his rendition of “The Old Bog Road” was played at the concelebrated requiem mass, which preceded the funeral to St. Corban’s parish cemetery.
“There is no explanation for this and nothing can prepare us for this. It is a time of great trial and pain for Deirdre’s family. We have to put our faith in God; we know he was with her in her last moments and he would have told her not to be afraid,” Fr. Thompson said.
He added that Deirdre was loved by God every day of her life.
Her only sister Josephine told the congregation that Deirdre was “the best sister ever” and she recalled sitting on the stairs at home awaiting her birth.
