First marathon at 60 for Haiti Charity

Elizabeth Booth, who set up the Open Arms Church in Newbridge with her husband Pastor PJ back in 1996, turned 60 this year and completed her fist ever marathon for charity.
The Open Arms church in Newbridge have adopted 145 poor servant children in Haiti and are raising funds to send them to school at a cost of about €7,000 a year to send 145 children to school.
As part of their fundraising efforts, nine of the members of Open Arms walked the Dublin City Marathon on the October Bank holiday Monday.
“2012 was my 60th year and I wanted to do something for Haiti that would grab people’s attention - hence my first marathon at 60,” said Elizabeth from Moorefield Park.
“I know most people run the marathon but I knew that wouldn’t be a goer for me so I choose to walk it, along with eight great guys and gals from Open Arms. We’d been training since April but still I was concerned I’d be unable to complete it. It was a fantastic day, we had blue skies, sunshine, lots of fun and laughter. I think we were last home over 8 hours but that didn’t matter we finished the race. Our goal was to raise funds for our Haiti project and we’ve reached our goal of €7500 for 2012.”
