An elderly Sister of Mercy nun was the victim of a vicious mugging on Saturday evening as she made her way from Newbridge Railway Station to College Park.

The nun, who is nearly 80 years-of-age was visting from her order in Loughrea. She was attacked at at 6.10pm from behind by a man. The attacker attempted to grab her handbag and pulled the sister to the ground before running off with her bag.

She was brought to Naas General Hospital and later removed to Tallaght to have her hip operated on. A quantity of cash was in the handbag, which has not been recovered, alongside a number of valuable personal items.

Newbridge gardai are are appealling for any witnesses to come forward. “This was an attack on an elderly lady,” said Sgt Ronan McDonald. “It is just not on and at her age anything could have happened to her.
