Demand for Alzheimer’s services at ‘breaking point’

At the recent KIldare Alzheimer’s association AGM members were informed that the demand on the day care services, for people suffering Alzheimer/Dementia within county kildare is at breaking point, according to Mayor of Kildare Micheal ‘Spike’ Nolan.

“Currently there are more than 60 families who are on a waiting list to avail of the day care centre in Monasterevin,” he said. “The sad part about the lack of a day care centre that can suitably cater for Families who have a loved one going through Alzheimer’s is that in most cases the patient is being cared for at home by their partner,In which some cases the partner is caring for their loved one on a 24 hour basis.” While acknowledging the importance of the current day care centre in Monasterevin it was reported to the meeting that the demand has outgrown its capacity and the need for a larger unit is the way forward for the Kildare Alzheimer association.
