Curragh troops are made of strong stuff for cancer charity

Twenty personnel from the 3rd Infantry Battalion stationed at the Defence Forces Training Centre in the Curragh Camp showed they are made of strong stuff recently when they participated in a charity fundraiser to pull an armoured tank for 18 miles from Wexfort to Enniscorthy.
The troops pulled the Mowag Piranha Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) on Friday 14 September to raise vital funds for The Hope Cancer Support Centre.
Corporal Shane Keogh of the Defence Forces Training Centre in the Curragh was the driving force behind the group of volunteer troops from the DFTC who undertook a collection along the 18 mile route. They raised in excess of €15,000 for the Hope Cancer Support Centre.
“The Mowag Piranha Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) pulled on this event weighs over 16 tonnes and provides firepower, mobility and protection to members of the Defence Forces serving overseas,” said army press officer David Slattery.
“The vehicle is currently deployed with the Irish Defence Forces on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).”
The 3rd Infantry Battalion, who were supported by members of An Garda Síochána, received a safety brief in Wexford town prior to commencing the pull, as well as on various locations along the route from Wexford town to Enniscorthy.
The Hope Cancer Support Centre, based in Wexford, provides emotional support to people affected by cancer.
