Curragh Post Office Box in wrong spot

When is a post box not a post box? This question was put to the test last week when a freestanding post box appeared in the Curragh Camp Post Office in front of the old granite post box on the wall.
A complaint was received by the council’s planning department of an alleged unauthorised development after the the freestanding post box appeared over night in front of post office building at the Curragh Camp.
Kildare County Council initially said they were investigating the matter.
However, according to An Post, from now on all internal and wall post boxes will be closed to the public. Instead, freestanding post boxes will take their places.
An Post spokesperson Angus Lafferty said the Curragh’s new freestanding post box was an authorised development, but it should not have been placed in front of the old one, which is now closed.
“It is currently being moved,” he said.
“It should not have been placed there. We have been closing our internal boxes and our wall boxes and putting boxes outside all post offices. It is handier for the post man when the post box is external to the post office on the stree outside.”
Local resident, Declan Brown, from nearby Ballysax Hills said the integrity of the historical architecture of the post office had been completely undermined by a post office box’.
“It has effectively obliterated a part of the built heritage of the Curragh Camp from view. In the interest of preserving the heritage of the Curragh, I would appreciate an explanation as to why this was done.”
