Curragh cadets raise money for children’s cancer charity

Members of the 88 Curragh Camp Cadet Class spent their final training weekend on a battle-run from the Curragh to Eyre Square in aid of Aoibheann’s Pink Tie - a charity which supports families of young children receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment in St John’s Ward, Crumlin.
The charity was established by Galway man Jimmy Norman in memory of his daughter Aoibheann who died at the age of eight. The cadets were inspired to run for this charity by their instructor Sgt Gavin Coventry at the Curragh, whose daughter Niamh (2) is a cancer patient and currently receiving support from Aoibheann’s Pink Tie.
The runners left the Curragh on Friday morning last, January 18, at 6am and shortly afterwards, thanks to a mention on Hector’s 2FM, radio show they had received an anonymous donation of €3,000.
They crossed the Shannon in Athlone at 5.30pm where they stayed the night. An early start after a hearty breakfast on Saturday morning ensured their arrival at Eyre Square at 6pm on Saturday. At Renmore, they were welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Galway Cllr Terry O’Flaherty welcomed the class to Galway and complimented them on the generosity and altruism.
Greeting them in Eyre Square were Jimmy Norman and friends of Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, including some of the children and families who will benefit from the funds raised along the way.
Jimmy expressed his deep gratitude to the class for not only raising much needed funds but especially for raising awareness of the support which is available to families of children in St John’s Ward at Crumlin hospital.
The runners collected a further €3,355 from the bucket collection en route and a final figure is expected at the end of month after sponsorship cards are collected.
