ROAD works around County Kildare have been suspended for a period following the death of a Kildare County Council worker on Wednesday last, 9 January.

Kevin O’Sullivan (59), who worked for the Council for 22 years, died after a road traffic accident around 3pm at Graguesallagh, near Ladychapel in Maynooth.

Asked if some or all road works in the county had been suspended following the accident, KCC spokesperson, Annette Aspell said: “The Health and Safety Authority has served Kildare County Council with an Improvement Notice which must be complied with within one month.

“In light of this the council is reviewing current procedures, particularly involving works on and adjoining public roads.

“It is hoped to complete the review of current procedures as quickly as possible and, as the review progresses sections will resume normal duties.  Affected staff are carrying out housekeeping duties.”

Ms. Aspell said that current procedures, particularly involving works on and adjoining public roads would be reviewed.

Drainage works were takeing place and Mr. O’Sullivan was directing traffic.

He was struck by a car, driven by a 68-year-old man.

The driver of the car who is familiar with the road is said to be devastated by the incident.

Gardai at Leixlip, who are investigating the incident, say that the weather conditions, in particular a very strong sun, were a factor leading to the accident.

Ms. Aspell speaking on behalf of the Council, there was “great sadness the tragic and untimely death of our colleague and friend Kevin O’Sullivan”.
