Concern that KCC may not be able to pay its road staff
Kildare County Council is under huge finanical pressure in terms of its roads programme and there is growing concern that it may not be able to pay its staff wages for the year, writes Lisa Deeney.
This is according to a recent Athy area committee meeting. Cllr Martin Miley asked for an update on the present funding situation for the Roads Department of the Athy Electoral Area. “The funding situation for the roads department for 2012 is extremely precarious,” a Kildare County Council report stated.
“Due to the reduction in grants from central government and the reduction in rates income, it has been necessary to substantially reduce the budgets of all of the area offices. The Athy electoral area has recently been made aware of its allocations for local and regional roads and discussions are ongoing with the senior engineer to determine if the area can continue to operate and to pay wages for the remainder of the year.”
Cllr Miley said “funding is a major issue right across the board”. He said there is huge pressure on resources and noted KCC is not going into too much detail. “Behind the scene negotiations are going on to secure road funding for the Athy electoral area” he added. KCC’s Roads Department looks after essential road maintenance such as potholes, drainage, resurfacing, traffic calming. The Athy Electoral Area covers Narraghmore, Crookstown, Castledermot, Kilberry, Athy town, Nurney and parts of West Wicklow.
“Concerns about paying wages just shows how thin resources are,” Cllr Miley added.
