Commuter burglars remain big headache for Kildare gardai
GARDAI in Kildare have had success in targeting native or indigenous burglars in the county, but individuals who drive into the county to commit crimes remains a problem, a senior garda officer has said.
Speaking at the County Kildare Joint Policing Committee meeting in Aras Cill Dara, Naas, on 30 April, Kildare’s most senior Garda, Chief Supt. Michael Byrnes, said there is huge concern over burglaries.
He said they have identified two areas of west Dublin, which are the source of Kildare’s burglar supply.
While some other crimes have decreased, there is a 9% increase in burglaries and there is now an average of four burglaries a day in the county.
Most private houses are being burgled between 7-10pm and on Friday, Saturday and Sundays, he said.
He told the committee that a lot of alarms are not being turned on and burglars did not seem too worried about them.
He revealed that a number of individuals living in the county have been targeted using covert and overt policing but there is major problem with transient or burglars living outside the county.
Some are arriving at 11 am in the morning in high powered cars and there is a danger to other road users as well as the gardai trying to stop them.
While what was described as “the rat run to Dublin” is a problem, Kildare and Dublin gardai are working together on solutions.
It is estimated by the gardai that around 60% of burglaries in Kildare are carried out by locals.
