Community Council appeals Kilcock hotel decision

KILCOCK Community Council has appealed against permission granted for a hotel and multi-storey apartment development in the centre of Kilcock.

Ballinlonty Ltd was granted permission to build apartments close to the Royal Canal and refurbish the former Corscadden's Hotel, now derelict, providing lounge, bar and other facilities.

But the Community Council has lodged an appeal on a number of grounds.

The plans include the demolition of a 19th century Coach House and archaeological requirements provide that the front of the hotel on the Main Street remain intact.

The applicants want to put up a multi storey development, around 70 two bedroom apartments, a crche, an off licence and a health and fitness centre.

The county council planning file (08/144) shows that serious concern was raised over the shortage of proposed car parking spaces.

Archaeologists recommended an excavation of the site, particularly on account of its relationship with the industrial link to the Royal Canal in the 19th century.

While the site is outside the zone of "archaeological potential" as set out in the Kilcock town plan, it is very close to this zone.

The Community Council say that the scale and height of the development to not suitable for the area. They are also concerned with parking spaces and the large number of apartments.

It has also argued the development is premature pending the upgrade of sewage and waterworks.

The Council, via a letter from secretary, Tom Ryan, also told the Council that there are already two off licences in the Main Street and it regretted there was no initial public consultation with them.
