Brady Bunch kids spill the beans on the iconic family show
Kurt Cobain was a big fan of the Brady Bunch, or so claims the youngest of the crew Susan Olsen, aka Cindy Brady who in town last Thursday with her TV brother Mike Lookinland aka Bobby Brady.
They were at the Museum of Style Icons at Newbridge Silverware where a number of classic outfits from the show are currently on display ahead of their auction, from April 7th – April 15.
“We haven’t changed a bit,” joked Mike as they stood in front of an old childhood publicity shot from the show.
“It is great to be a part of the Museum of Style Icons. I’ve had people tell me for a long time that the show was iconic. Maybe we did something iconic.”
Both child stars, who admitted that they are still proud of the show, agreed that being a part of the Brady Bunch was a fantatic, if life changing experience.
“I’m proud of what the show has done for other people,” said Susan. “I’m quite a big fan of Kurt Cobain and I met his sister recently. She told me that they used to watch the show every night sitting in their pyjamas before bed time. That to me is something special and the First Lady Michelle Obama was able to name every one of the Brady Bunch on the Jay Leno show recently.”
The appeal of the Brady Bunch was such that the show, which was on air from the late 60s to the early 70s, was an over-night hit and the ratings soared with each new episode.
“Being on a hit show gets you into the business,” said Mike.
“I thought as a young man showbusiness was easy because we were in a hit but then I realised afterwards just how hard it is to have a hit show.
“I became a camera man for 20 years and I also liked alcohol enough to become an heavy-drinker. I stopped 12 years ago and that saved my life but I would have done that anyway and fame was a pain to me. Also we weren’t paid very much unlike nowadays and we weren’t spoiled. The show to us was a responspility so because we weren’t made to be so high we didn’t have so far to fall. We weren’t cool and when the show finished nobody had that much respect for us - the press never got it but the viewers love us. All in all the show gave us a good work ethic.”
The costumes will eventually go up for sale, by the Auction House to the Stars, Julien`s Auctions, in their two day Hollywood Legends Auction, May 7 and 8.
