Boxing champ Katie Taylor lit up Whitewater in Newbridge last Sunday.

The Olympic gold medallist was on hand to turn on the Christmas lights at the shopping centre.

The Bray woman took time out to chat to locals and get her photo taken with some of her young fans.

Katie was joined in her illumination duties by Ryston Boxing Club’s youngest member Robin Murrin (7) from Coill Dubh and Niamh Carty (15) from Prosperous who is the current Girl 4 national boxing champion.

The centre pulled out all the stops to welcome Katie to Newbridge. The crowds were entertained with family activities, prizes and the arrival of Santa Claus on his sleigh.

Five lucky Leinster Leader readers were among those who got to meet Katie on the day. Our competition winners enjoyed a VIP meet and greet with the boxing champ plus won tickets to Santa’s Grotto.

The winners were: Alice Linehan, Naas; Lynda Burke, Naas; Aisling Kelly, Sallins; Shane and Leah McEvoy, Rathcoffey and Daragh Noonan, Newbridge. Thanks to all who entered the competition.
