Thomas Redmond has withdrawn an accusation that his fellow councillors are “bigots”.

The Athy Town councillor made his remarks during a debate on a motion that called for support for same sex marriage.

The motion was not put to a vote at the meeting on Wednesday night. It was amended to welcome the fact that gay marriage will be one of a number of issues discussed at the forthcoming constitutional convention.

Cllr. Redmond, Labour, who is the Leas Cathaoirleach, had proposed the original motion.. Cllr. Aoife Breslin of the same party seconded it.

He withdrew his remark today.
