Naas man had to be carried from his car.

AN Athy man with 37 previous convictions appeared at Naas Court.

Michael Foley whose address was given as Clonmullion was given two consecutive prison terms of nine months each, totalling 18 months, at Naas Court.

He was convicted of burglaries at Athy post office on July 18 last and at Mama Mia’s, Church Lane, in the town on February 19.

Det. Gda. Patrick Bambrick told the court nothing was taken from the post office but some €200 worth of damage was caused.

The defendant was identified from CCTV footage.

During the break- in at Mamma Mias the till, containing €200 was stolen, although the till was recovered.

The defendant was also prosecuted in relation to a number of break-ins at various locations around Athy this year including thefts from a vehicle and an apartment.

Solicitor Conal Boyce said the defendant’s convictions go back to 1988 and he described him as a heroin addict whose crimes coincide with his heroin habit.

Mr Boyce added that the defendant, aged 40, is drug free since he went into custody but he had indicated in letter to the court that he wishes to be drug free.

Det. Gda. Bambrick agreed it was unlikely the defendant would commit crimes if he did not have a heroin habit.

The defendant was also fined a total of €4,500.
