14 week old cheers on Katie Taylor

A 14-week-old baby who was but a twinkle in her parents’ eyes when they first applied for Olympic tickets was in London to watch Katie Taylor win gold last Thursday evening.
And so impressed were they with the fight, that Evie Kate’s parents, Jonathon and Edwina Morrissey, have decided to rename her Evie “Katie”.
Her father says she “goo-ed and gaa-ed” her way through the fight, but slept through the medals ceremony!
Jonathon told the Leinster Leader that the Clane couple, both pharmacists, organised their Olympic trip 18 months ago. “She wasn’t even planned at that stage!” he admitted.
The couple applied through the lottery for five categories of tickets, each involving Irish athletes. They included the women’s lightweight boxing finals, “because we knew, or we surmised that Katie Taylor might feature”.
And as luck would have it, that’s the only category where they were successful!
So last Wednesday, the couple packed their bags and loaded little Evie Kate into their car, crossed the Irish sea to Hollyhead and drove down across Wales and central England to Ealing in London, where they stayed with Edwina’s aunt Carol. Evie was “a dream on the boat, not so good in the car”.
They previously brought her on a road trip to Kerry, “as a tester,” Jonathon added.
The Clane man, who works in Marron’s Pharmacy, is very impressed with the whole Olympic experience.
“It’s probably one of the best sporting events I was ever at. There were so many Irish there yesterday, the security guy actually asked if there were any Irish left in Dublin.”
The Taylor fight itself was amazing, he explained, with constant cheering and clapping. Given the famous noise levels, Evie wore a pair of ear defenders which were given to her by Edwina’s brother Austin O`Brien, who is a motor-sport engineer working for Arden Motor-sport in Banbury, England.
So effective were they that she fell asleep during the medal ceremony!
“All the other parents were panicking about getting something for their kids,” Jonathan explained.
When the Leinster Leader spoke to Jonathon last Friday, the family was preparing to go camping in Newforest in the south of England.
