Traveller feud explodes during Kildare market

Pick axes, golf clubs and iron bars which hold up market stalls were used in a mini riot which took place in Kildare's Market Square, last Thursday morning, June 3.

What Gardai are describing as a "feud between two Traveller families from the Mountmellick and Portlaoise area" kicked off at 11.10am during a busy market, but was shortlived.

"It only lasted between five and ten minutes," a local Garda source revealed to the Leinster Leader. Within 20 minutes the busy market had returned to normal, notwithstanding the heavy Garda presence.

One man was injured in the back of the head during the course of the the incident, although it was confirmed that no members of the public were injured.

"We're carrying out an active investigation of this disorder incident and all of the suspects are known. We have viewed CCTV footage of the area."

It is understood that one of the families involved have been trading in Kildare for a number of years.

"It appears the other family came along that morning and there may have been an attempt at mediation, which obviously broke down.

"Some stall holders have been coming to the market for well over 30 years and there have never been any incidents," the Garda said, "It's just a select few ruining it."

Two women were arrested and released later without charge. A file is being prepared for the DPP with a view to bringing charges.
