Tragic end to search for missing man

The month long search for a missing Monasterevin man, came to a tragic end last week when the body of Ruane O’Mahoney was recovered from the canal.

“Last Friday January 31, at 12.30am, following a planned search of the River Barrow by gardai from Kildare town, Monasterevin and Kildare Civil Defence, we recovered a body from the canal at Grangecoore, Kildangan, Monasterevin,” confirmed gardai.

His identity was established as being that of Ruane O’Mahoney.

A post mortem was due to take place yesterday, Monday February 3 at Naas General Hospital.

Ruane was missing since Tuesday January 7 and gardai reported he was last seen at Pairc Mhuire area of Newbridge.

Gardai launched a major nationwide appeal for the public’s help in tracing Ruane and they received a massive response.

“We would like to thank the public for their assistance during the last number of weeks and to the volunteers from Kildare Civil Defence who helped in the searches,” added the garda spokesperson.

Ruane is survived by his daughters Marie and Jasmine, sisters Ann and Teresa, brothers John and Tom, extended family, relatives and friends.

He will be reposing at Paul O’Neills Funeral Home Derrinturn, today Tuesday February 4.

On Wednesday, he will be brought to The Church of the Holy Trinity, Derrinturn arriving for requiem mass at 1.30pm.

Interment will take place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
