Two suspected dissident republicans are in Garda custody following a search of a Newbridge house.

Saint Brigid’s Church in the Curragh Camp was broken into on Wednesday night, November 28 last and a safe was stolen from the Sacristy.

Parish Priest Fr John McDonald said the raiders were looking for money in the safe. The safe was later retrieved by gardai on the Curragh Plains with a hole cut through it.

“One of two safes were stolen,” he said.

“Nothing was taken from the safe which had an old church plate inside and some chalices.”

The raid was not discovered until the following morning at 8am when the Sacristy was opened.

“They had burst through a hole in the door,” he added.

“They broke a panel in the door and then broke the lock. The main thing was the safe was found with all the contents still there. We are very relieved. The Church plate is very old and goes back a long time. There were about 15 items in the safe but no money was kept in the safe.”

According to the Parish Priest it was the first time the Church had been broken into since he has been there.

“Some copper was stolen from the roof a few years ago,” he recalled.

“This was the first time in my time that it has happened inside. I am very happy we have the stuff back.”
