With work well underway on the revamp of Rathangan Community centre, contractors expect to be finished the build in October/November.

Meanwhile, the fund raising continues with a number of events lined up in the coming months. The project has been financed by Kildare County Council and the Leader Fund but the community has to raise a certain amount of matching funds.

The second annual Bluebells and Buskers event takes place at Kilinthomas Woods on Sunday May 4 at 2pm.

“We were blown away by last year’s response,” said Cllr. Fiona O’Loughlin, who is also on the Community Centre Committee.

The event is being organised by the O’Loughlin family in conjunction with the committee in memory of their father Jimmy, to commemorate his great love of the Woods and the Arts.

Come May, the bluebells come into bloom and give the whole place a dramatic carpet of blue, dotted with white wild garlic.

The walk will consist of a meander through the woods with pop up entertainment from 15 different artists ranging from tenor Philip Scott to local country singer Whiz O’Rourke.

There is no cost, but Jimmy’s family hope participants will make a donation to the refurbishment, a cause close to Jimmy’s heart as he spearheaded the original rebuild back in the 1970’s.

“It was such a special day last year. To see so many people who hadn’t been out to Kilinthomas before, the talented musicians, and it was such a great family occasion in memory of dad. We were thrilled to raise €5,000,” added Fiona. She thanked those who provided refreshments and helped out with the event.
