An accident at Sallins rail station today claimed the life of a Naas man.

Dermot Corr, in his late fifties, was from Monread Road on the outskirts of the town.

He died having been struck by a passing train at about 10.30 today.

The train was on a scheduled run from Heuston Station to Kent Station in Cork.

It is thought Mr. Corr had retrieved something from the rail line and was on his back on to the platform when the accident occurred.

Mr. Corr was a well known and popular figure in the Naas-Johnstown-Kill area as a seller of fundraising “lines”.

He was unmarried and was a member of a large and highly respected Naas family.

Irish Rail has expressed its sympathy to the Corr family.
