Gardai have resolved peacefully an incident where a local businessman locked himself into the wine cellar of his house in the Curragh and threatened to harm himself following four hours of negotiations last night.

The alarm was raised shortly after 5pm and when gardai arrived at the house they discovered the man had barricaded himself into the cellar.

The businessman finally agreed to come out and speak with negotiators just after 9pm on Thursday night.

He was later transferred to Dublin for medical treatment.

Gardai sealed off the house, located at the Curragh yesterday evening around 5pm and began the lengthy negotiations with the man.

Trained negotiators were also sent to the scene to open up a line of contact with the man.

Some of his family were believed to have been elsewhere in the house at the time.

A fire brigade unit was also called in case the man started a fire.

An ambulance also arrived to the house as gardai, family members and friends attempted to convince the man to come out of the cellar.
