O’Loughlin is Mayor

As predicted, Fiona O’Loughlin is the new Mayor of Kildare.

The veteran Fianna Fail county councill or defeated Padraig McEvoy (Ind) and Sorcha O’Neil (Sinn Fein) for the position.

Meanwhile, Cllr. Frank O’Rourke has been elected to the position of Deputy Mayor.

He defeated Sinn Fein candidate Ide Cussens for the role.

The Leinster Leader understands that there is an agreement between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, along with a couple of independents.

Fianna Fail won 12 of the 40 seats in the local election on May 23 and Fine Gael won nine giving the group 21 votes, the necessary majority in some major votes.

Between them Sinn Fein (5 seats), Labour (5 seats) and the independents (9) total 19, are just two short of a narrow, if also, potentially, unstable or short term majority.
