A popular local training initiative, Newbridge Childcare will close at the end of May following 14 years providing childcare requirements in the county.
Current classes due to graduate in March and May will be unaffected however Solas have confirmed that Newbridge Childcare, which is based in the Courtyard Shopping Centre, is set for closure.
Local Training Initiatives are community based training programmes that are operated by sponsor companies in the community and funded by Solas, formerly known as FAS.
“Newbridge Community Development Ltd is the sponsor of the Newbridge Childcare training programme,” said Maria Walsh of Solas. “It has decided to discontinue this sponsorship. If suitable alternative sponsors apply for funding, these applications with be considered by Solas pending the transfer of responsibility for training in the Kildare area to Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board. Funding is provided by Solas to support the initiatives in the form of staff salaries and training allowances. However in order for training programmes to operate, there must be a sponsor company in place.
Laura Sinnot who runs the course said the course is over subscribed every year.
“If we found a community based not for profit organisation to take us over the funding would continue,” she said. “There are two of us employed with 14 students per course.”
