Mixed fortunes for Athy’s basketballers

Athy College Junior girls took on Heywood Community School on 29th January in Athy. The Athy girls put up a great fight and the score was tight for the first three quarters of the match. Defending well, Athy held off the Heywood attack until well into the second half. Heywood fought hard to keep possession.

Olivia Dooley gave a fantastic performance throughout the match. Miriam Kidd and Taylor Hunter also showed great skill and determination. The final score was a disappointing 6-26 to Heywood. Hard luck girls.

Meanwhile, Athy College’s second year boys went head to head against Mountrath on Wednesday, 29th January. The Athy boys took the lead in the first quarter with 6 points scored by Stephen Badakin and Tokunbo Samuel. In the second quarter, Mountrath narrowed the margin by scoring four points but by the end of the third quarter Athy had increased their lead again bringing the score to 10-4.

In the final quarter both teams claimed baskets and Athy finished the game deserved winners with a score of 15-6. Players of the match were Stephen Badakin and Alex Moore. Well done lads, you’re on a roll!
