A week-long celebration of events were held to mark the second anniversary of Teach Dara, Kildare town with guest of honour, Glen Ryan turning out for a special open day last Friday, March 7.

As he cut the cake, the former Kildare footballer said he hadn’t been fully aware of the facility before he was asked to attend.

“I suppose that’s the point of being here today, to create awareness of Teach Dara. It’s a very good facility for the people in the town,” he said.

He recalled the old Brother’s house, as it was when he was in school, and paid tribute to the roll of the former De La Salle school in the town, and everyone associated with getting Teach Dara up and running.

“I would like to wish the centre continued success,” he added.

Teach Dara is a community and family centre which is used by various community groups such as the Grandparents Group, Men’s Group, Morning Art Classes, Friday Knitting Group, Parent & Toddlers, Young Women’s Group, Dyslexia Ireland, Chess Club, Academy grinds and much more. The centre also has a number of anchor tenants. The building was funded by the government, but Teach Dara does not receive any support for the day to day running of the centre.

Manager, Sarah Shakespeare said the aim of celebrating the anniversary was to encourage more members of the community to get involved in the activities at Teach Dara.

“We had a brilliant week and lots of the anchor tenants got involved and there was a lot of interest. There was a great buzz,” explained Sarah.

Events included a Parents and Child’s Art and Crafts workshop, a Toddlers breakfast, a tree planting ceremony by Sr. Nano Brennan at Bishopsland along with Kathleen McEvoy, a Healthy Breakfast Morning and a Shave or Dye event.

She also gave special mention to Aiden McKeown for his hardwork in getting the project off the ground.
