Free parking, festive events and a local shop draw are among the many events planned for Athy this Christmas season, writes Lisa Deeney.

Last Saturday, the Big Switch Event saw Santa in town to turn on the Christmas lights in Emily Square in the late afternoon.

At 8pm local band Tonight We Live headlined the ‘Rock for All Ages’ in the Athy Community Arts Centre.

In good news for shoppers, from 10am every day during December, there will be free parking in the town and all day Saturdays.

The Athy Town Promoters Group is urging everyone in Athy and the surrounding areas to shop local this Christmas.

They have developed an incentive scheme where shoppers get free entry to a draw for one of 30 local shopping vouchers with a total prize fund of E2,000 up for grabs, sponsored by Athy Chamber of Commerce and Athy Town Council. Other events taking place include the Christmas Experience Variety Concert on 6 December, a Christmas crafts fair on 16 December and ‘While Sheperds Watched’, a Christmas concert on 20 December.
