A formal offer from the St Vincent de Paul to transfer a Newbridge homeless shelter, Michael Garry House, to Kildare County Council will be made this week writes Paula Campbell.

Consultations are ongoing between Kildare County Council and St Vincent De Paul to transfer the management of the homeless shelter to the council after a change of usage from homeless men to women and children caused some outrage locally.

According to the SVP, the decision was taken because the homeless needs in the area had changed with more women and children requiring accomodation. The SVP decided last month that the building was well placed to respond to the growing need for supported accommodation to cater for homeless women and women with children for up to 12 months at a time. The shelter had been used as shelter for men only, where residents have to vacate the premises between 9am and 4pm.

“The consultation is on-going. All the remaining residents of Michael Garry house have now moved to more long-term accomodation,” said SVP spokesperson Jim Walsh.
