Ex Leader MD passes away in Scotland

The death has taken place in Scotland of former Leinster Leader managing director, Iain Stewart.

Mr. Stewart (68) died at his home in Ayr after getting ill late last year.

His funeral is expected to take place in Ayr this weekend.

A Glasgow native, he lived in Milltown, west Kildare, for many years before returing to his native country.

He initially came to Ireland to work at Irish Ropes. He joined the Leinster Leader in the late 1970s/early 1980s as an accountant. Over these years, the Leader grew from a single newspaper into a group by buying other newspapers.

In 2005, it sold out to the Scottish based Johnstown Press group for around €139m approx.

Mr. Stewart, then a shareholder, benefited from the sale. Staff were given a proportion of the sale price. After a brief period he left the JP group, which was recently sold to its current owners, Iconic Newspapers.

An excellent golfer, Mr. Stewart represented Scotland early in his life.

Later selected to play for the Irish senior amateur side, it emerged that he should not have been selected because of his Scottish cap.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, daughters, Shona and Sandra, and son,Gordon
