The final countdown is on for the 78 Kildare candidates taking to the polls this Friday for election to Kildare’s new 40-seat County Council.
Due to nationwide electoral reform, the town councils in Leixlip, Naas, Newbridge and Athy are being abolished (along with the separate elections for town councillors).
Instead, Kildare County Council is increasing from 25 to 40 seats. The county has been divided into five municipal districts.
These are Naas, which will have 9 seats on the council; Athy (6 seats); Kildare/Newbridge (9 seats); Celbridge/Leixlip (7 seats) and Maynooth (9 seats).
Fianna Fail is fielding 14 candidates across the county; Fine Gael 16; Labour 12; Sinn Fein 7; the Green Party, People Before Profit and Direct Democracy Ireland 1 candidate each, and there will be 26 Independent candidates.
Voting in the European elections will also take place on Friday.
The counts will be held at the Punchestown event centre, with results expected to come in from Friday morning.
