Child neglect, rape, sexual assault, theft and drugs offences on the rise

The number of child neglect cases, sexual offences including rape and sexual assault, theft and controlled drug offences increased in Kildare in 2013 according to the latest crime figures.

The number of burglaries and crimes including including aggravated murder, homicides, human trafficking, kidnapping, prostitution, dangerous driving leading to death and drink driving offences were all down last year in comparison to 2012.

The number of burglaries and related offences recorded in 2013 were 1,253 compared to 1,745 in 2012. Aggravated burglary figures for 2013 amounted to 13 for last year compared to 15 in 2012.

However the figures for theft and related offences rose sharply over the same time frame from 2,946 in 2012 to 3,114 in 2013. Possession of an article with intent to burgle also rose from 15 to 23. Theft from a shop rose slightly from 573 in 2012 to 651 in 2013. Theft from a person doubled from 61 in 2012 to 120 in 2013.

Meanwhile figures for drink driving fell from 304 in 2012 to 290 in 2013.

And there were no incidents of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm either year; however, the figures for driving while under the influence of drugs remained the same at 11 recorded cases each year.

However there was a notable increase in the number of child neglect cases including cruelty and abandoning a child. The figures recorded in 2012 were 23 but they almost doubled for 2013 at 39 recorded cases.The number of controlled drug offences rose from 350 in 2012 to 528 in 2013.

The number of sexual offences rose from 78 to 94 in 2013 while rape and sexual assault rose from, 76 to 88. Weapons and explosive offences fell slightly from 60 to 56 in 2013.

The number of murders fell from three to two while manslaughter figures fell from one to zero. Kidnapping and related offences fell from seven to two in 2013 and figures for abduction of persons under 16 fell by 50 percent from two to one.

Litter offences fell from seven to five while criminal damage offences dropped from 1,168 in 2012 to 973 in 2013. Arson offences were down from 120 to 106 in 2013.

Public order offences fell from 992 to 809. Prostitution fell from six to two while liquor licensing offences fell from 20 to 9.
