An independent candidate in the Celbridge-Leixlip local election, Jean Berry, says she was “stunned” to find that Kildare County Council comprises 23 men and just 2 women.

How does that represent the needs and issues for the general population of north Kildare? she asked, hence her decision to stand for election.”I believe that government of the people should reflect the population,” she said.

The Dublin born teacher/administrator, has lived in Celbridge for over four years.

“As a teacher and administrator I have had a broad experience of working with the most dis-advantaged groups in Ireland and poverty. In America, I worked on the Native American Reservations.”.

National rent control is needed, she says.

“Finding a house to rent or buy is a nightmare in this market. There is more demand than supply so landlords are raising rents locally up to 25%, and getting rid of good tenants for higher rents,” she said calling on the Council to promote more awareness of housing/rental rights.
