A man was remanded in custody until tomorrow, Thursday, 5 June, in relation to a major illegal drugs find.

Dariusz Lelakowski (43), a Polish national, appeared before Judge John Coughlan at the 3 June sitting of Kilcock District Court.

Mr. Lelakowski was formally arrested at Newbridge Garda station at 12.05 on 3 June. He is charged in connection with the alleged having for sale and supply an estimated half a million euros of cannabis plant dried herb at his address at Dunville Cottage, Crossmorris, Naas on Monday, 2 June.

When the charges were put to to Mr. Lelakowski he had nothing to say, evidence was given.

Gardai objected to the defendant being remanded on bail on the basis of flight risk. He was not working, the Court was told.

The defendant’s solicitor asked that he be released on bail as the Gardai had his passport in their possession. He had family in Ireland, had lived nine years here, had a wife and son, and was unlikely to flee.

Judge Coughlan said while he was inclined to grant bail he remanded Mr. Lelakowski in custody and asked the Gardai to do more research on his background. He adjourned the case to the Naas District Court on Thursday, 5 June.

There was a request for free legal aid and a decision on this was adjourned until Thursday.
