Newbridge-based Councillor Micheal ‘Spike’ Nolan has resigned as the Fine Gael group party whip for Kildare County Council.

A meeting will be held this evening (Tuesday) to select a new candidate for the role after Cllr Nolan’s resignation on Monday.

Cllr Nolan told the Leinster Leader that he no longer has the time to carry out the role, which he described as an ‘“nternal job” that includes overseeing any issues brought forward by Kildare County Council’s Fine Gael FG councillors.

“I resigned the group whip,” said Cllr Nolan. “It is an internal job and I don’t have time for it anymore.”

Cllr Nolan took up the post in 2011 after former group whip Martin Heydon was elected to the Dail.

Cllr Senan Griffin, who is group leader, called tonight’s meeting to choose a new group whip for the party. The meeting is a closed meeting and will take place at 6.30pm in Aras Chill Dara.
