On Thursday November 28, the Athy College boys’ basketball teams competed in the regional Finals in St Mary’s Hall, Portlaoise. A bus full of supporters travelled to Portlaoise to cheer them on.
The day kicked off with the Under 16 team facing Kildare Town. They got off to a good start with David O’Connell scoring a basket after two minutes. However Kildare replied quickly, scoring at the far end of the court.
The boys played well with scoring contributions from Kieran Kidd, David O’Connell, Don Dibenzi, Oisin Moore, Stephen Badakin and Corey Brennan. Unfortunately, victory was to elude them and Athy College picked up silver.
The Under 19 team came up against an experienced Kildare Town side. Kildare dominated the game with a half time score of 35-09. Undeterred, the Athy boys didn’t drop their heads and went on to score 11 points in the second half. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough and victory again wasn’t ours. The final score was 51-20.
Despite the score there were strong performances from Federico Peis and Victor Badakin.
On arrival back at Athy College the teams were greeted by their school mates who lined the avenue to welcome them home and congratulate them on their success.
Well done to both teams for bringing home silver medals!
