Shaws Department Store in Athy is currently seeking an extension to a planning permission for the redevelopment of its trademark store in the South Kildare town.
Its application was filed to Athy Town Council last week where it is looking for an extension of duration of a previous planning decision. Back in 2007 it was granted permission for a new three-storey development extending to a total of 7149 sq.m. and comprising of new retail shop and individual retail units, office space on 50,51 and 52 Duke St.
Cathaoirleach of Athy Town Council, Cllr Mark Wall, welcomed the news. “Developments like this are essential to the future of the town. It is good to have Shaws help develop the town in whatever way it can. They are looking to extend planning permission and we hope this can be carried out as quickly as possible.” A decision on the planning permission is expected within weeks. At time of going to press, Shaws declined to comment on the timescale of it redevelopment plans. Meanwhile, planning permission has also been sought for a 3G telecoms tower by Highpoint Communications Ltd. It is seeking permission for a 42m mast to be located in the Athy Business Campus.
