Over a quarter of a million speeding fines were issued by gardai in Kildare last year.
That’s according to the lastest figures from the Kildare Garda Division. During 2011, 262,602 speeding fines were issued to motorists driving in or through Kildare. So far this year, 2,500 on the spot fines have already been issued.
More than 10,000 drivers were arrested in Kildare on suspicion of being over-the-limit, while 33,000 fines for hand held mobile phone use were issued.
And some 15,000 people were fined for not wearing their seatbelts. Kildare’s main roads - the M7, the M4 and the M9 - are among the most heavily used roads in Ireland, meaning that a large proportion of these fines could have been issued to motorists not resident in Kildare.
