NAAS has been formally declared a Fair Trade town with the presentation of a special certificate.

The presentation took place on Friday last at 3pm in Town Hall.

A Fair Trade committee was first set up in 2006 and the steering group is grateful to the schools, cafés, restaurants, retailers, offices and local people for supporting the concept.

Fair Trade Fortnight took place this year between February 27 and March 11 and the theme for this year is, ‘Take a step for Fair Trade’.

The public is being asked to buy something that has been Fair Traded and details of where to buy Fair Trade goods are detailed on Naas Fair Trade website.

Before status could be granted a steering group had to be set up and it had to have local authority support as well a minimum of 23 cafes and restaruants servng only Fair Trade goods. A business enterprise has to serve only FD goods in this dcampaign and thsi was ISS recruitment. The group also had to attract media coverage for events staged and a significant number of schools had to become Fair Trade Schools by using the CSPE programme.

Samantha Vallurai from Hyderabad, India, visited Naas during the fortnight to relate the value of the concept to her community.
