Celbridge Gardai say they are “keeping an open mind” as to whether a fire which resulted in the destruction of three cars was started maliciously.

The fire occurred in Springfield Court in the Ballymakealy estate off the Clane road and caused thousands of euros worth of damage to the three cars.

The cars, including a Volkswagen Passat and a Nissan Almera were burned out as the fire raged.

Celbridge gardai are investigating the fire which occurred between 4 and 4.30am on Thursday morning, June 9.

It is believed that the fire started in a 10 year old car and spread to the two cars on either side.

“The cars were parked up beside one another,” a Garda source revealed. “A fire can start in a car for many reasons, but we are investigating it and keeping an open mind.”

Meanwhile three vehicles were set on fire in the early hours of the previous Thursday, June 2.

The cars were parked in a row when a fire broke out in one of them at Willow Rise, Primrose Gate, Celbridge around 1.45 am in the morning.

Gardai at Leixlip said the cars, a 2002 Volkswagen Golf, a 2007 black Volkswagen Toureg and a 2010 silver Ford Focus were extremely damaged.
