The controversial Magee Barracks in Kildare town will be put up for sale in the near future, according to the Department of Defence.

The Department was responding to a request from Cllr. Suzanne Doyle that the barracks be made available to Kildare town soccer club to facilitate a training pitch.

It declared; “Because of the current condition of Magee Barracks, the Department would have serious health and safety concerns over the allocation of lands within the barracks for use by the general public.”

Speaking at the October 16 Kildare Area Committee meeting, Cllr. Tony O’Donnell said he understood the barracks was down the list in terms of the priority of properties being put on the market. Cllr. Doyle also pointed out a Department representative had previously given the impression it would be happy to accommodate community uses.

“I know we have a new school going in there, could they not be put adjacent to that?”

After the barracks closed its asylum seeker centre, a master plan was drawn up but then the recession hit.
