Leixlip gathers visitors from four countries

Leixlip will host a second major Gathering event this months when the Town Twinning/Leixlip Special Olympic games events takes place from 23-26 August.

Leixlip will host a second major Gathering event this months when the Town Twinning/Leixlip Special Olympic games events takes place from 23-26 August.

Eighty five visitors from Leixlip’s twin towns of Bressuire, France, Fraserburg, Scotland, and Stavanger, Norway, will arrive on Friday, 23rd, to be treated to a range of events and functions until leaving on Monday morning.

The athletics events will take place at Confey GAA and Leixlip Amenities on the Saturday and a wide variety of social activities from a walk in St. Catherine’s to reception indoor games at Leixlip Youth and Community Centre.

During the games, lunch will be provided at St. Mary’s GAA and following a reception at Newtown House on Friday evening a short conference on disability will be held.

A gala dinner in the Springfield Hotel will take place on Saturday and the Kildare Civil Defence and Red Cross will be in attendance.

Around a 150 volunteers will help. “There has been wonderful support from the community,” said Marion Lyons, secretary of the joint organising committee, comprising the Town Twinning and Special Olympics club, chaired by Paddy Lennon.

The estimated cost of €24,000 is being met with fund raising events, a Town Council grant of €11,000, an EU fund grant of €9,000, announced very recently and a €3,000 Intel grant, minded by treasurer, Theresa Byrne.
