A large crowd of past pupils, pupils, teachers, friends and neighbours turned out at Bunscoil Bhride in Rathangan last Friday May 31 for the official opening of the brand new state-of-the-art 16 classroom extension.

Principal Maria Rogerson welcomed everyone to the Rathangan school on a historic day for the town. The extension contains three classrooms for special education and a drama/circle time room as well as general classrooms. Those in attendance got a chance to tour the new building and catch up with old friends.

The official opening commenced with a special mass celebrated by parish priest Fr. Gerard O’Byrne at the Church of the Assumption next door. The pupils were highly involved in the liturgy while the school choir and violinists provided the music and singing.

Afterwards, the crowd made its way over to the new building where the ribbon was cut by the four previous principals - Betty Lawlor, Sr Rosari, Sr Oliver and Sr Brigid. There were performances by the pupils followed by refreshments.

Bunscoil Bhride currently has 326 pupils enrolled with 42 girls are set to start school this year. The new classrooms have two toilets each, a double sink, walls of sliderobe storage, interactive white boards and an intercom phone system.
