Eleven year-old Simone Byrne from Kildare town has been so inspired by her great grandfather’s battle with throat cancer that she has organised a fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society at the Kildare Town Community School this Wednesday April 3.

She has so far raised E50 but the cost of insurance for the bake sale and collection is E100. Her mum, Val is hoping a business or company might come on board and pay for the insurance as this will eat into any money the Scoil Bhride Naofa pupil will raise.

“She has been very lucky so far. Her and her friends, Victoria, Charmaine, Trinny, Stephanie and Ciara, have worked very hard on this. We’ve had a lot of donations for the raffle and support from Mary Katherine’s deli, Bradburys, Xpert hardware, Tesco, Dunnes Stores, Whelan’s Pharmacy, McHughes, Connolly’s, Bergins, and Mooefield Pharmacy. Home and Cook were the only business from the Kildare Village who came on board. The secondary school has looked into it and they have tried to include the event, which runs from 12 noon to 3pm, under their insurance but they can’t,” explained Val.

The fifth class pupils are inviting everyone to pop along on the day and support this event. Val explained that Simone’s great granny also died from cancer and this also prompted Simone to organise this event.

Anyone who wants to help out can call Val on 085 2834061.
