Athy woman’s murder trial starts today

The trial of a Castledermot man who is accused of murdering a mother-of-one is to commence in the Central Criminal Court today, Tuesday, November 6.

The trial of a Castledermot man who is accused of murdering a mother-of-one is to commence in the Central Criminal Court today, Tuesday, November 6.

Michael McDonald (50) of Barnhill, Castledermot, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Breda Cummins (31) on May 13, 2010 at Michael Dooley Terrace, Athy.

When he was arraigned last Tuesday, October 30, Mr. McDonald pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Ms. Cummins but this plea has not been accepted by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He also pleaded not guilty to assault causing harm to John Lawlor (33) of Pearse Terrace, Castledermot at Michael Dooley Terrace on the same date.

The trial will take place before Ms. Justice Iseult O’Malley and a jury of eight men and four women is expected to last for three weeks.
